Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, utilizes reflected sound waves to evaluate internal structures. Ultrasound is a safe diagnostic tool with no known risk or side effect. It does not require the use of ionizing radiation (x-rays), special dyes or anesthesia. A transducer, a small hand-held device, is passed over the skin to transmit and receive reflected echoes (sound waves), which are then displayed as images of the body on a video screen. The computer-generated images are then interpreted by a radiologist.
