MAMMOGRAPHY

Columbia-Presbyterian Eastside Radiology is accredited by the ACR (American College of Radiology) for mammography.  We currently perform mammograms using both the GE digital and analogue (film) units and use the CADx computer-aided detection.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an image of the breast that is made by using low-dose x-rays.  While standing in front of the mammography machine, your breast will be compressed between two plates.  The plates will come together to make the breast as flat as possible in order to find abnormalities that may be cancerous. Usually you will have two views performed, from the side and top.  The test may be slightly uncomfortable but only takes a few minutes.  A radiologist will review the films and a report will be sent to your referring physician. Sometimes additional tests are needed to take a closer look at a subtle finding.  These can be performed in most cases during the same day, or at your convenience.

What is CADx?

The CADx is a highly sophisticated computerized detection system that enhances digital images and aids in detection of areas.

Who should have a mammogram?

The American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology, and the American Medical Association recommend that women over age 40 receive a mammogram every 1 to 2 years.  Some women under the age of 40 can have a mammogram at the request of their doctor if they have a family history of breast cancer, or if a lump is felt in the breast. Also, one baseline exam between age 35 and 40 is recommended

We participate in the National Digital Mammography Archive

The archive provides access to digital mammography data wherever in the United States the mammogram was done. Participating providers can obtain breast imaging (mammo, US, MRI) for comparison. The archive maintains a complete history for individual women no matter where they may move or how long since their last mammogram.
